Concrete pipe forms an artificial barrier to resist the kind of erosion that eventually destroyed the original Poplar Island. The extensive restoration project is to be completed by the year 2020, at a cost of about $400 million. Rebuilt with dredge fill, the new island will be a major remote wildlife area for thousands of shorebirds and other wildlife. May 2005
