This large sandpiper is easily identified by its loud, rolling call and by its flashing white wing patches, which are conspicious not only when the bird flies but also doing displays. Willets are social birds, nesting in loose colonies that are easy to locate because of the constant loud calling of the adults. If a predator such as a marsh hawk approaches a colony, several pairs may fly up to mob it.
